Master's Message

Brethren,

We are now a quarter through the year, and I think it is a good time to take stock of how the year has begun. I realized that I had laid out my plans for 2024 but never explained my goals, so let me put them out now.

First, I want to expand our membership. We are on the right track and have had three new Brothers join our Lodge this year! I hope that our Open House and Anniversary Celebration on June 22nd will help attract interest from the community and increase the possibility of more good men seeking membership. Apart from that, let’s continue being upright men and Masons as we carry out our day-to-day lives, and our good example will doubtless attract attention. And don’t be afraid to speak up for Masonry; the ring I wear every day sparks conversation and opens avenues of conversation.

Secondly, I have a goal of improving our Lodge’s ritual. For those who were able to attend the recent School of Instruction, I hope this helped, as it certainly helped me! I also think the upcoming Fellows of the Craft training on April 17th will be of great benefit. If we know more about why we do certain things in a certain way, it will make the ritual more relevant and add more significance to what we do. Our beautiful rituals set us apart as Masons, so let’s all work on improving that aspect of our work, thereby improving ourselves.

Lastly, our Open House and Anniversary Celebration will be an excellent opportunity to work towards my third goal of improving our participation in our community. This event will coincide with the Foster Street Fair, and I’ve arranged for the American Red Cross to be on-site to carry out a blood drive in the morning. Details are still being worked out, but I intend to have a fun event with food, building tours, and prizes.

I always appreciate your feedback. This may be my year, but this is our Lodge, and we all make it what it is. So, please reach out to me! It will all make our Lodge that much better.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Matthew Cox

Brethren,

It's officially Spring season, when the plants grow as the sun shines, with the help of either the rain or the water we shower on them. Like in our lives, we grow for the better when we take time to improve ourselves. This past month, we were able to spend some time together to grow as Masons; we had our School of Instruction, which improves our knowledge and skills for our beloved lodge. I remember the wisdom of old “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another”

This April we're going to start our Fellows of the Craft, for more details please approach any lodge officers.

I want to welcome our new EAs from these past months and for many more to come. I'm glad to see continuous growth in our Washington 46 family. To my fellow lodge officers, I want you all to know that all your efforts in helping the lodge are appreciated. As always, it's my pleasure and an honor to serve with you all.

This April, I will be traveling to visit our brethren in Washington State at their stated meetings: Southgate Masonic Lodge No. 100 in Burien and Rainier Masonic Lodge No. 189 in Shoreline.

Hope to see you all this month!

Fraternally,

March was a very busy month! We had an Occasional Grand Lodge, another EA degree, a Basic School of Instruction, and a Statewide Training Day, to name a few. It has been a fun and educational month, and I’ve enjoyed leaning into my role as Junior Warden, doing my best to support the WM and the Lodge as a whole.

It has been great to see Brothers at Lodge and these various events. I continue to encourage you to be active with our Lodge. There’s much in store this year and plenty of opportunity to be present with your fellow Brothers.

We will likely be holding FC degrees in the coming months, so watch for those announcements. Our degrees are one area where we could improve attendance. The more Brothers we have to witness, the more impactful these ceremonies can be. Plus, we always have fantastic refreshments afterward!

For April’s Stated dinner, Chef Paul Stanislaw will be serving up a fresh and crisp caesar salad, roasted chicken accompanied by red-skin potatoes, asparagus, and tangy chicken gravy.  For dessert, homemade coffee cake, which pairs well with…um…coffee, of course!

Don’t miss it!

It is a great pleasure to welcome our newest Entered Apprentice Mason, Joshua Revert. A special thank you to all who participated in his degree on the 20th of March. We now have three EA’s working through their degrees, which hasn't occurred for several years at Washington Lodge. We are very fortunate that we can confer these degrees with members from our lodge, a task that many lodges are unable to do.

This leads me to our recent Statewide Training Day initiated by Grand Lodge. One subject that I think deserves extra attention is the Dusty Mason Degree; let’s refresh those items that may have been forgotten in your early days of lodge, especially if you feel uncomfortable returning to lodge. Yes, we can make that happen, and we want you to return! With our dinners before meetings, plenty of fellowship, and rewarding and mindful events planned for the future, I think one meeting a month would be a lot of fun. More details coming soon.

We especially want the membership to be aware of our processes to welcome new members, background checks for prospective candidates, charities that we participate in, and how you can help us with committee help and support.  The weather is improving and daylight-saving time has arrived. At our April meeting, we will vote on a dispensation to move our start time to 7PM for our stated meetings in June, July, August and September. This has certainly been very well received in years past so please come and support this resolution.

Don’t forget our monthly brunch on the second Saturday of the month! Start time is 10AM.

We look forward to seeing some new faces. If you need transportation, please contact the master. All that information is available on our website, www.washington46.org

In Memoriam

Brother Lee Walis Noah was born December 8th, 1936, in Dayton, Oregon and passed to the Celestial Grand Lodge on February 5th, 2024. Lee resided at Jennings McCall along with his wife Debbie and was a mason for 45 years. All his degrees were conferred by Washington Lodge. He was raised to the sublime Degree of Master Mason on January 17th, 1979, and after his discharge from the Navy as a UDT (Seal) he began to work in the Puget Sound area doing underwater wreckage salvage. As one thing led to another Lee went into the trucking business and then eventually ended up working for Mt. Scott Fuel as a heavy equipment operator, retiring at the age of 60. Lee was a member of many masonic and affiliated groups, but the youth groups were his forte, especially the International Rainbow for Girls. He will be greatly missed.
