Master's Message

Brethren,

Spring is my favorite season. As the cold and darkness slowly transforms into warmth and light, there is hope the worst of the weather is past us, and we have the hope of bright things to come. Let’s not only welcome this light but look for the light that is in ourselves, our Brothers, and the world at large and spread that light.

We have had a busy February and March will be no different! Please look at the calendar for a list of all the events happening at the Lodge this month. The first important event in March is not actually on the calendar as it is not happening at our Lodge. This is the Occasional Grand Lodge happening on March 2nd at the Scottish Rite Center in Salem. I would like for us to make a strong showing and have as many Washington Brothers attend as possible. Please reach out to me with any questions.

We also need to have a big turnout for the Basic School of Instruction we are hosting on March 16th. This will be a great opportunity to refresh yourselves on masonic etiquette and ritual and get answers to those nagging questions that you always want answered. Afterwards, there will be a chance to obtain a basic proficiency card.

Lastly, Washington Lodge is honored to host the Statewide Annual Training Day for our District on March 23rd. This will take the format of a zoom call in the morning followed by discussion and questions afterwards.

I know you are all busy and I truly appreciate the time you all make to make our Lodge as active and successful as it is. Your participation in these activities along with the memorial service, brunch, degree, meetings and other work is a great gift. Thank you!

Sincerely and Fraternally,

Matthew Cox

Craftsmen,

This past February was a great month for all of us: we had a wonderful time at the DeMolay Crab Feed; we were able to confer another EA degree with an amazing team; we awarded brethren a 25-year certificate; brothers from other lodges visited us during our stated meeting; we had a great time visiting our brothers in Milwaukee-Waluga lodge’s stated meeting, and we appreciated their warm welcome!

Our lodge is filled with wisdom, as well as new incoming members. We will have an upcoming EA degree this month. Please attend! I’m so happy to see new brothers come into the fold!

I want to express my gratitude to our Brother JW Jesse McCann for helping us manage our website and to our WB Ken for setting the roles for these degrees.

This March we’re going to see each other even more. We’re going to visit the Occasional Grand Lodge in Salem, we’ll have School of Instruction, and we’ll also have Statewide Training Day in our lodge. For more details, please get in touch with any lodge officers. I remember that our brethren from Milwaukee-Waluga Lodge mentioned that they would visit us to retrieve their travel gavel and share fellowship with us. Come join us for that! I look forward to seeing you, dear brothers!

Fraternally,

Signs of spring are in the air. Daylight is getting longer and the birds are chirping. With the advent of Spring comes a rekindled energy.

In our lodge, that energy can be felt with the welcoming of new brothers into Masonry, visiting other lodges, and working with each other to set new goals and achieve them. There's much more in store!

As your own spring-like spirit comes out of hybernation, take stock of how good and fruitful Washington Lodge has been these past months. I would love to see even more of you at our upcoming functions.

We are all so busy these days, but let that not be an excuse. We must be dilligent and determined to make time for each other. Our fellowship is vital! So, I challenge each of you to make time for at least one function this month. You'll be glad you did!

Speaking of attending, did I mention our stated dinner menu?

Paul Stanislaw returns to serve up a delicious March dinner. To start, we'll have a fresh Farmer's Market salad served with a creamy  buttermilk herb dressing. For the main course, savory, house-made meatloaf accompanied by mashed potatoes and roasted broccoli. For dessert, a warm brownie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Don't miss it!

Yours in Masonry,

Jesse McCann
JW

Another busy month is behind us!

I would like first to congratulate our newest Entered Apprentice masons Jayke Bickford and Kai Kreneck. To all the brothers who participated in the degree, great job! Our budget was passed at our February stated meeting, as our Treasurer, Warren Burkholder worked many hours compiling a consolidated budget for both the lodge building and the lodge. No doubt there will be changes to our budget throughout the year, so as we say, it is a work in progress. We have also sent in our annual per capita form to Grand Lodge; we now have 169 members. At our stated we reported that six members have passed to the celestial Grand Lodge, including Lee Noah, whose service will be held at the lodge on Sunday, March 3rd at 1 PM.

A great turnout at the DeMolay Crab Feed on the 23rd. Washington Lodge had three reserved tables with 24 members and guests attending. Fellowship and food top notch.

A recent article in the Oregonian talked about brother and President George Washington and his Rules of Civility. With the current political climate and the unrest throughout the world, it's amazing to think that those precepts from George Washington’s time are still useful today as they were some 200 years ago. Let me quote just a couple:

Every action done in company ought to be with some sign of respect to those that are present.

Think before you speak; pronounce not imperfectly nor bring out your words too hastily, but orderly and distinctly.

And so, we, as masons, are taught to follow these rules of civility, and I know that our society and the relationship among the brothers would also benefit from the advice set forth all those years ago.

With Easter coming early on March 31st, please have a joyous one and I hope to see many of you at our upcoming meetings.

Fraternally,

Don Stapleton, PGM, Secretary

Six Little Stories With Lots of Meaning

1. Once all the villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer, all the people gathered, but only one boy came with an umbrella. That is faith.

2. When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them. That is trust.

3. Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning, but still we set alarms to wake up. That is hope.

4. We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future. That is confidence.

5. We see the world suffering, but still, we get married and have children. That is love.

6. On an old man’s shirt was written a sentence “I am not 80 years old; I an sweet 16 with 64 years of experience”. That is attitude.

Have a happy day and live your life like these six stories. Remember- Good friends are the rare jewels of life, difficult to find and impossible to replace!
