Brethren,

September has always felt like a return to routine. Summer is not quite over, but vacations begin to wind down, school starts again, and our calendars seem to fill up almost overnight.

Washington Lodge does not go dark in the summer, so in one sense, we never leave the work. We continue to meet, conduct our business, and spend time together. Still, September brings a change in pace and gives us an opportunity to consider the work that remains before the year is over.

When we speak of “the work” in Masonry, it can sound like something grand or ceremonial. More often, however, it is quite ordinary. It is learning a part for an upcoming degree, arriving early to help set up, serving on a committee, or noticing that a Brother has been absent and taking the time to call him. Sometimes the work is simply being present when it would be easier to stay home.

None of these things is especially remarkable on its own. Taken together, however, they are what keep a Lodge healthy. Our Lodge does not function because everything happens automatically; it functions because Brethren continue to give their time and attention to it.

The same is true of the work we undertake within ourselves. We are never handed a finished ashlar. We improve slowly, often imperfectly, and usually through small choices that no one else will ever see. The important thing is that we continue.

As we move into the final months of the year, I hope each of us will find some way to take up the work again—whatever that may mean for you. There is still much we can accomplish together, and I look forward to seeing what the remainder of the year brings.

Greetings from the West,

As we move into September, we are leaning into the end of our summer. What a fine summer it has been. The weather has been great. Most everything in the garden is fruiting and flowering and demands frequent watering. A chore, for sure, but I find it to be meditative and relaxing. Along with the fun of finding vegetables hiding under leaves and being amazed by how much they have grown in a couple of days. What a great time to be alive. I found myself moved by the passing of Dolly Parton in late August. Besides being a singer, actress, businesswoman and philanthropist, she was so friendly and giving. She started a fantastic charity that gives books to children for free. This wonderful effort is called Imagination Library and has put over 300 million books into the hands of children all over the world. Dolly’s Imagination Library has a connection to Start Making A Reader Today, (SMART) which is a major benefactor of the Oregon Masonic Charitable Foundation (OMCF). Helping kids learn to read and love books, is a powerful and positive benefit to our society. Every year we have many Masons that pass on to the Celestial Lodge and some of them move me, and some I don’t know. I am even more taken by our most senior Masons that still make it to a Lodge meeting or event at the George Washington Masonic Center. I enjoy seeing them and feel the connection. Their tenacity to make it to a meeting and be a part of something special is also powerful. Thank you, gentlemen, you mean a lot to me and to Washington 46.

By continuing to uphold this principle, the world becomes a better place, an act of kindness at a time.
