Preserving Our National Treasure
This month’s article will focus on my recent trip to the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. It is a “National Treasure”, a representation of all the masons, in all jurisdictions throughout the globe. The memorial is a destination for all masons to experience as we prepare for the 100th Anniversary in February of 2023.
This anniversary, a symbolic cornerstone laying, will be like no other masonic event ever assembled. Alexandria, Virginia every year holds a George Washington Parade, and along with the Conference of Grand Masters, this event will draw thousands of masons from around the world. The legacy of George Washington was also in full view as officers from our board of directors presented a wreath at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. It was indeed a very moving event.
Part of our trip also included a private tour of the George Washington Library at Mt. Vernon and a behind the scenes look at some of the personal possessions of the Washington family, including masonic aprons of Washington and articles used in the dedication of the US Capitol.
This really points out how important it is that our own lodge catalog and maintain a record of all our books and paraphernalia that we have collected for some 150 years. A special thank you to WB Dave Munson, who for many years has been working on a data base of all our members, including those lodges that have consolidated with us.
Brethren,
The George Washington Masonic National Memorial needs your support for its restoration and upkeep. In your estate planning and throughout the year, please try and budget some funds for this very special endeavor.
We look forward in seeing you at our September stated on the 11th. Don’t forget, we start at 7PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Don Stapleton, Secretary
